February finances – back in the black: just a little bit better than break even!

I think I can say I had a good month in terms of my Feb 2019 income: I broke even 6 months ahead of my anticipated schedule (as outlined in this post), mainly thanks to income from my new part-time job as a work place assessor (and soon to expand into teacher-trainer!). I also had a much better than anticipated month of resource sales, maybe they’re up slightly because it’s mock exam season and the paranoia’s setting in with the students/ parents?

This isn’t the kind of post I’d do through WP/ steempress, but I honestly couldn’t be bothered with the formatting on steem, it’s just so much easier here! Anyway, here we go…

Total Feb income = £1450

  • New Job – £365 (very unexpected)
  • Resource sales – £850 (much better than expected)
  • Advertising revenue – £100 (from January)
  • Ebay sales – £130

New job – O.K, so the plan back in August wasn’t to just work a regular job, it was to build up the blog and live off that, but TBH this job is excellent – possibly because it’s anything other than teaching in an institution and it looks like it’s going to be couple of days a week going forwards, and then some marking on top, and that £415 for Feb is likely to increase. It’s just what I need with the unanticipated collapse of my advertising revenue since last this time 2018.

Resource sales – A very good month. As I said above, probably because it’s mock exam season. And this doesn’t even include the VAT I accidentally paid on items sold in my new WordPress store.

Advertising revenue – this is about a quarter of what it was this time last year…. I always knew it might happen, and I’ve no idea whether it’s due to a genuine decline in advertising income coming into WordPress due or whether they’re fucking me more now than they were back in 2018. I think I need to exert some pressure on them and maybe move my entire blog to another platform where I can control the advertising revenue coming in.

Ebay Sales – As part of my decluttering I put a dozen items for sale on Ebay, and some of them did much better than I expected… 4 Motorhead singles sold for £50, some Munch Bunch books I bought about 6 years ago (on Ebay for around £20 I think) sold in various lots for about £80…. Great returns. I’m a massive Motorhead fan btw, but it somehow seems silly to treasure Motorhead records, I mean it’s not very rock and roll is it? The way I see, Lemmy would have sold them, so fuck it, I’m sick of my stuff and I’ve got enough sellables in the cellar to give me a £100 supplement per month for at least a year, maybe two, if I can only be arsed to go through the hassle of doing the Ebay ting.

Also I haven’t counted the £50-60 I’m getting from interest on my moneys, peer to peer investments or steem, I just treat all that as wealth accumulation!

Total February Expenditure = £1420

 I‘ve actually stopped obsessively recording my daily expenditure on an item by item basis, I’ve hit on the strategy of just buying everything with one debit card, which basically tells me what I’ve spent money on. Genius! Maybe I shouldn’t be relying on the card, no doubt my expenditure data is being sold on to some other companies, so maybe I should use cash, but given that my intent is towards spending less I’m fairly resistant to marketing campaigns!

I still get an enormous sense of satisfaction when I see my halved mortgage repayments (and no service charge!). The rest of the ‘fixed expenditure’ I can’t really do much about.

The £75 payment to Barclaycard is due to £4000 I’ve slapped on it – I got a 1% money transfer for 18 months, and I get a higher return than that on my various savings and secure investment accounts, so rude not too! Come next April when the 18 month deadline’s up I’ll pay it off.

Other than this, too much coffee, not too bad on the beer, and otherwise I had a skint month, which is pretty standard for me!

Total savings = £30!

Wahoo!

Burying my head in the sand about…

  1. National insurance and income tax. Oh fuckidefuck.
  2. Gym membership which will need renewing next Oct in a one off payment of around £400.
  3. Car insurance/ MOT coming up in August, not putting anything buy for that…. Probably looking at around £700.

Well I say burying my head in the sand, I’ve actually got enough money ‘put by’ to cover all of these expenditures – I’d already planned to take these large expenditures out of my wealth, but going forwards from April I’m gonna have to start putting extra money by for tax, and then from August, planning for the gym and car, I’ve decided I want/ need both!

Overall Assessment 

8/10 – Given that I’d expected to be about £600 in the red this month, I’ll take this. NB Had I attended the recent London steem meetup i would have been in the red, I’d calculated that would have cost me around £80 with the transport and additional hanging around in the SE from my recent weekend there, so I may not have been there, but my absence helped with my primary goal – which is saving down for full retirement!
